AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 01/28/09 -- CoreTrace, the creator of high-security / easy-change application whitelisting, announced today that its customer, the State of Texas, has been named Best Solution Award Winner for the Department of Information Resources' (DIR) work in securing critical VoIP networks with CoreTrace's application whitelisting solution, BOUNCER. The award, presented by GTC Southwest 2009 and sponsored by Government Technology magazine, recognizes the best technology solution implemented within a government organization. The State of Texas will be presented with the award on Wednesday, January 28th, during the GTC's 20th annual conference in Austin, Texas.

"It is an honor for one of our customers to be acknowledged by GTC," said Toney Jennings, president and chief executive officer for CoreTrace. "This award win is yet another proof point that application whitelisting is quickly gaining credibility in the market as a viable antivirus solution. The State of Texas' DIR is a great use case of an organization that switched to application whitelisting to increase protection with less system impacts than blacklist-based antivirus solutions and security patching. We truly believe that it is only a matter of time before more organizations come to this same conclusion."

The State of Texas DIR is tasked with maintaining an extensive Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network that supports various state programs. To do so, DIR implemented an IP recording solution which was isolated from the Internet, but still raised the concern of users inadvertently introducing malware. To address concerns, a blacklist-based antivirus software was introduced. It was not long before system patches and signature updates requiring a manual transfer to the isolated network were deemed too much of a time and money-consuming process for the State to handle. DIR also discovered that the antivirus software affected server stability and also degraded system performance by scanning every new voice file as it was being written to servers.

Rather than reactively responding to every new threat and scanning every new voice file, DIR attacked the problem in a revolutionary way, by only allowing approved, "whitelisted" applications to execute. Leveraging BOUNCER by CoreTrace, DIR automatically generated unique whitelists of sanctioned applications for each computer. Once BOUNCER began enforcing the whitelists, the IP recording system functioned as designed. Malware will never be on DIR's whitelist, therefore it cannot execute. This protects the system from even never-before-seen malware, and eliminates the need for blacklist-based antivirus software and emergency security patching. This way, DIR secured the VoIP network and HHSC's IP recording system while effectively reducing manpower, balancing system loads, and restoring system stability and performance.
