FAIR LAWN, N.J -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- CALMAC, a leader in energy storage systems, received the Golden Circle recognition from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for its charitable donation at its 2010 winter conference. CALMAC’s donation will help ASHRAE Research advance the science and technology of HVAC&R applications to gain a better understanding of how systems work and interact. Among the research topics that money donated to ASHRAE will help fund are thermal energy storage for emergency cooling, characteristics of power plants based on time of day, and time of day generation of renewable energy.

“Donated in honor of my father, Calvin D. MacCracken, founder of CALMAC and a fervent inventor who dedicated his life to research and innovation, we know he would be pleased to see ASHRAE’s research advancements in the entire HVAC&R industry,” said Mark MacCracken, CALMAC CEO and USGBC Chair-elect. “CALMAC is a company founded on innovation. Calvin established the company in 1947 in Englewood, New Jersey as a research-orientated company, and to date, CALMAC has developed over 250 products, mostly on behalf of other companies or the U.S. government. CALMAC fully supports ASHRAE’s research.”

Since 1919, ASHRAE’s research has focused on the discovery of principals and is currently establishing a five-year research plan. Universities and other private enterprises conduct these research programs, and the findings are used to update ASHRAE’s standards and guidelines. ASHRAE’s guidelines then serve as a benchmark and help educate and promote uniform testing, ratings and safe practices throughout the entire HVAC&R industry. One research project currently approved will provide valuable information on the dynamic relationships between renewable energy availability, utility generation profiles and the Thermal Energy Storage design methodology that will maximize the capture of the renewable resource.

CALMAC was honored for its donation at ASHRAE’s winter meeting at the president’s luncheon on Monday, January 25, an annual meeting co-located with the AHR Expo in Orlando. CALMAC was also an exhibitor at the AHR Expo this year, discussing its hybrid cooling solutions for commercial buildings. The AHR Expo is the world’s largest HVAC&R event, promoting energy efficiency through educational seminars, displaying new products and technologies, and providing a venue for industry professionals to display research findings.
