MsfreePC Opens a Contribution Route for Microsoft Settlement Dollars to Fuel Linux Technology

Companies mentioned in this article: Lindows.com

MsfreePC (www.MSfreePC.com), a web service designed to help Microsoft customers (NASDAQ:MSFT) process their settlement claims will now funnel a percentage of each claim to popular Linux products.

MsfreePC will, for a limited time, pay 10% of each claim processed on the MsfreePC.com site to a host of open source projects. Consumers can select the organization they would like to see benefit from the donation by using MsfreePC's "Instant Settlement Wizard," the quick four-minute claims tool. Claimants can choose to donate to Mozilla, an open source Internet browser project or OpenOffice.org, an office suite that offers word processing and other productivity applications. Also on the list to receive contributions are the GNOME project, KDE, and Debian.

"The anti-trust settlement should encourage healthy innovation," said Michael Robertson, chief executive officer of Lindows.com Inc. "Despite Microsoft issuing MsfreePC.com a take down notice (www.lindows.com/takedown), we will stand by consumers and give back to the technology initiatives who've helped create and are advancing the state of Linux today."

The goal of MsfreePC (www.MSfreePC.com) is to make the arduous paper-heavy settlement process easy and completely web-based, giving consumers a quick and easy way to gain their portion of the $1.1 billion dollar settlement. Receipts of past purchases are not required on MsfreePC.com, so anyone who is eligible can participate and immediately take their portion of the settlement dollars owed to them.

Immediately, after using the "Instant Settlement Wizard," claimants can receive their software and possibly a free computer. The free PC offer will expire after November 16, 2003. MsfreePC will be available for a limited time due to the deadlines related to the settlement process. Read the complete eligibility details at www.MSfreePC.com.
