LA JOLLA--- The Burnham Institute Appoints Vice President of Business Development

The Burnham Institute has appointed Dr. Adrienne Day to the newly created position of Vice President of Business Development.

Dr. Day will be responsible for the business development activities of the Institute, including establishment of strategic alliances and identification of new sources of government grants.

Dr. Day brings with her over 10 years' experience in the biopharmaceutical industry during which she contributed to the successful closing of deals valued in excess of $250 million. Her prior corporate experience includes: Vice President of Business Development at Conforma Therapeutics Corporation; Senior Director of Business Development at Molecumetics Ltd.; Associate Director of Corporate Development and Project Manager at Ligand Pharmaceuticals. She also held positions as Senior Research Scientist at Invitrogen Corporation and Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University. Dr. Day completed postdoctoral fellowships at USC Norris Cancer Research Center and The Burnham Institute. She has B.Sc., B.Sc. Hons, and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

The Burnham Institute is an independent, nonprofit, public benefit organization dedicated to biomedical research. Founded in 1976, the Institute was originally known as La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation. Since 1981 it has earned designation by the National Cancer Institute as a Cancer Center for basic research. The Institute is home to two major research Centers -- the Cancer Center and the Del E. Webb Center for Neuroscience and Aging, which focuses on diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases. A third center focusing on Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases was founded on July 4, 2004. The Institute operates on an annual budget of approximately $60 Million primarily funded by federal grants. Other important sources of funding include private foundations and philanthropy. There are over 600 individuals employed by the Institute, including approximately 300 individuals with doctoral degrees. Approximately 63 faculty lead the research efforts, which includes training of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows.
