IRVINE--- Toshiba Commercializes High Luminous Flux White Light LEDs for Alternative Lighting Solution

Companies mentioned in this article: Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. - Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc.

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, and its parent Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba), today announced a new generation of white light emitting diodes (LEDs) that achieves the industry's highest level of luminous flux for lighting used in either the home or office, decorative interior lighting in stores and LCD backlighting. The company is scheduled to ship samples of the new white LED beginning in July and start mass-production in October at an initial volume of 1 million pieces per month.

Toshiba's white LED, TL10W02-D, realizes a luminous flux of 60 lumens at 500mA (2 watts). This performance was achieved by improving mounting technology for the LED chip and improved heat dissipation with a low thermal resistance package. An optimized design of internal reflective structure improved the efficiency of the optical emission.

Alongside the TL10W02-D, Toshiba also announced the 30-lumen type, TL10W01-D, which is scheduled go into mass production in July. Both new LEDs adopt a compact package and are applicable to Lead (Pb)-Free(1) reflow soldering.

"The introduction of high luminous flux white LED is a significant milestone in the effort to make LEDs a viable alternative for a variety of lighting applications," said Masanobu Sato, business development manager, optoelectronics for TAEC.

Background of the Development

The luminous flux of White LEDs is achieving a higher, and longer operating life and lower power consumption which are ideal characteristics for future lighting solution alternatives to incandescent and fluorescent lamps. Toshiba has been developing these white LEDs to achieve higher luminous flux and optical efficiency, and will introduce them as alternatives to use as general lighting sources.

Pricing

Samples of Toshiba's TL10W02-D and TL10W01-D white LEDs are priced at $6.60 and $4.70, respectively.
