Webmetrics, a provider of website testing, monitoring and analytics services, today announced a significantly enhanced version of its AppMonitor service, extending the reach of web application monitoring to include any connected plug-in or desktop application. AppMonitor-DA is the third generation of Webmetrics' transactional monitoring services and offers the ability to simulate virtually any type of application available to web users, including Active X, Java Applets and Windows executables. AppMonitor-DA also features enhanced graph types, as well as historical and performance benchmark data comparisons.
"As web applications evolve to include non browser-based components, companies require an easy-to-use, cost effective method for monitoring the uptime and performance of those connected apps," says Tim Drees, CEO of Webmetrics. "We've extended the capabilities of our AppMonitor service to include the testing of non browser-based web applications, such as Windows desktop applications, Internet Explorer plug-ins, live software updates and flash applications. As these diverse technologies play an increasingly important role in the delivery of online services, we're addressing a complex web application monitoring need previously unmet by providers in our industry."
The term "web application" traditionally refers to HTML-based applications, but the lines between a web application and a desktop client are continually merging. For example, a PC anti-virus application requires frequent web-based updates for continuous protection against new virus threats. In this scenario, AppMonitor-DA can launch the PC application and run a transaction path through it, measuring the response time of each important step, such as connecting to the virus update server over the Internet, download transfer and installation time on the client side.
AppMonitor is a hosted service that tests application availability and performance up to every five minutes from Webmetrics' GlobalWatch Network, with agents across 24 cities worldwide. The newest service release, AppMonitor-DA has been enhanced to offer monitoring support for any application that communicates over the Internet. Application support includes:
-- Non browser-based Internet apps such as Instant Messaging and Flash;
-- Delivery of downloadable windows executables and desktop applications, such as web conferencing applets and live software updates (OS, anti-virus, etc.);
-- Browser based web transactions, such as shopping cart check out, order tracking, member logins and online account management utilities.
In addition to delivered application support, AppMonitor-DA provides enhanced reporting capabilities and graph types, which are also available to Gold-level AppMonitor customers. New reporting features include:
-- Correlated Account Data: the ability to correlate select website, transaction and server performance data from multiple monitoring accounts to gain deeper performance visibility and to identify cause and affect relationships. Also supports correlation with HitAnalyzer web analytics data.
-- Customized Reporting Templates: build customized reporting templates for ad hoc report generation and/or for daily, weekly, monthly reporting.
-- Historical and Benchmark Performance Comparisons: plots transaction performance against your historical performance averages and that of the AppBenchmark, Webmetrics independent transaction performance index. AppBenchmark averages are based on the transaction times of five of the top e-commerce sites, including Amazon, eBay, Sears, Target and Wal Mart.
-- New Graph Types: include transaction time by agents/cities, errors by time - scatter, performance variation and worst performing hour/day trending.
Pricing and Availability
AppMonitor-DA is available now and priced at $750 per month, per transaction monitored. Currently, delivered application monitoring is executed from two of the 24 GlobalWatch Network locations - Hartford, CT and San Diego, CA. Webmetrics plans to roll-out delivered application support from up to five monitoring agents by the end of the year.
