COLUMBIA, Md. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Tecore Networks®, a pioneer global supplier of mobile network infrastructure, announced today the findings of a recent study that reveals iNAC™ Managed Access solution can save Departments of Corrections (DOC) over $100 million in a five year period.
Recent reports of confiscated contraband cell phones in prisons across different States indicate that up to 25% of inmates possess a smuggled cell phone; and these are solely the percentages of phones discovered. According to most State laws, inmates caught with contraband cell phones face extended sentences that cost most States in excess of $70.00 per day. A mere 40 extended sentences can, thus, cost the State over a million dollars annually – some States’ correctional facilities are indeed uncovering tens of thousands of contraband cell phones. As the convictions for contraband cell phones continue to climb, the additional costs and overhead related to extending the period of incarceration can quickly reach tens of millions of dollars annually on a national level.
An iNAC Managed Access solution can selectively deny cellular service in a designated area, thus rendering a smuggled cell phone inoperable. Without service, the demand for the device ceases, and consequently the need for extended sentences. The study, run at Tecore headquarters, shows that from merely saving on extended sentences, certain States appreciate a return on investment in less than 12 months.
“Contraband cell phones have quickly become the largest threat to corrections in years,” said Tim Murphy, VP of Managed Access Sales at Tecore Networks. “Many facilities have tried various low-tech / low-cost / low-efficiency options hoping to keep the problem at bay. The reported numbers of criminals that are ‘staying connected’ around the country are at astonishing new levels, and are a strong indicator that other options alone simply are not enough. Tecore’s iNAC Managed Access solution not only makes security sense, in fact, it ends up paying for itself.”

About iNAC II
The use of unmonitored communication devices by inmates has reached epidemic levels in most correctional facilities, posing tremendous threats to public safety and law enforcement. By automatically differentiating between “authorized” and “unauthorized” cellular devices within a target area, without staff involvement or jamming wireless signals, the iNAC stands as the optimal solution to this increasing threat. Dedicated to increased focus on architectural enhancements and reducing costs for correctional facilities, Tecore introduced the new and improved iNAC II in July 2011.
Tecore’s iNAC is the first, and only, deployed Managed Access system in a US correctional facility. First deployed in September 2010 at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, the system blocked 216,320 calls, and messages from as many as 600 devices a day in the first month, and over 1.8 million calls to date.
