AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The way in which teachers test students' knowledge is rapidly changing. The U.S Dept. of Education is demanding ways to measure higher order thinking that utilize next-generation digital assessments - specifically Common Core State Standards. A new book - "Technology-Based Assessments for 21st Century Skills: Theoretical and Practical Implications from Modern Research" - features top scholars in education discussing their research on how to best measure complex knowledge, skills, and abilities using technology-based assessments.

The book includes 16 chapters authored by over 40 leading education researchers, including Drs. Chris Dede, James Pellegrino, Bob Mislevy, Eva Baker, and Edys Quellmalz. Authors discuss theoretical and practical implications from their research and outline their visions for the future of assessment with technologies ranging from games and simulations to mobile devices, such as iPhone and iPads.

The book's lead editor Dr. Michael Mayrath said, "The book took over two years of sustained work by top scholars around the world. We have an all-star author list that we challenged to outline their visions for the future of technology-based assessments."

Dr. Mayrath is CEO of GYLO (GetYa Learn On, LLC), an educational software company building games and simulations consistent with research presented in the book. The company's first game-based assessment is currently in development and will integrate with GYLO's existing products, such as their acclaimed introductory statistics app - "Statistics 1". A preview of the new game-based assessment will be given during a workshop on February 10 at the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) conference in Ft. Worth.

GYLO's Chief Scientist, Dr. Priya Nihalani, authored a chapter for the book with Dr. Dan Robinson from the University of Texas at Austin. "It's truly an honor to be included in this distinguished list of scholars. GYLO is committed to creating pedagogically effective products and being recognized amongst the top educational researchers shows that we intend to keep our promise," said Dr. Nihalani.

GYLO became an early pioneer in mobile learning by conducting extensive research with Abilene Christian University's Connected program exploring the use of iPhones, iPods, and iPads in higher education. GYLO's "Statistics 1" iOS app was found to significantly increase introductory statistics students' grades when the students reported higher motivation by using the app compared to other students. The app includes lessons, quizzes, flashcards, calculators, glossaries, formula list, decisions trees, and tools.

The book is published by Information Age Publishing and is currently available for purchase online at Amazon. For more information, visit the GYLO website.
