HOUSTON -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Verdande Technology, a provider of real-time Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) technology, today announced that it is working with The Methodist Hospital System to incorporate CBR into cardiovascular surgery cases. The decision-support system is being developed with Methodist’s physicians to evaluate patient risk and provide real-time, evidence-based decisions based on past events to assist with present cases.

Perioperative blood loss is a well-researched problem in open heart surgery, but the majority of the existing studies focus on select factors instead of developing a framework combining static, pre-operative information with real-time, dynamic intra and postoperative data. The Methodist Hospital System cardiology team is working with Verdande Technology to develop a CBR-driven application, built upon the company’s Edge platform, to combine historical pre, peri and postoperative patient data, bolstered by the cardiovascular team’s expert knowledge, to guide the design, implementation and testing of the data mining procedures.

“This is an extremely exciting project which evaluates real time predictions of possible adverse outcomes,” said Dr. Alan Lumsden, medical director of the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in Houston. “Such a system would permit improved patient care and may represent a new standard in real time predictive modeling.”

“The business of healthcare is to provide the best care possible while lowering costs, and the development of a CBR-based application serves this goal by identifying both low-risk patients to avoid unnecessary treatment and high-risk patients to help decide on urgent, preemptive interventions,” said Neal Benedict, CEO, healthcare, Verdande Technology. “Real-time, evidence-based decision support can play a critical role not only in cardiology, but in any healthcare case that has unexpected situations and requires smart, data-based decisions to support physician experience.”
