Mobile VoIP provider Truphone swept the titles at the annual GadgetFest, an event organized by CommNexus on Oct. 23 in San Diego.
Truphone captured both the Judges vote with the top score and the overall crowd vote with the debut of Truphone Anywhere for the Blackberry winning the 2008 Gadgetfest Gadget award. The new Blackberry application is expected to become available for download on Monday, Oct. 27. Truphone Anywhere provides reduced price International and Long Distance via a very intuitive user interface on the Blackberry. By capturing the GadgetFest Gadget crown Truphone joins a list of champions that includes recent titlists Google's GrandCentral, Direct TV's SlingBox and the Motorola Q phone amongst others.
Mushroom Networks finished second presenting their Internet Bonding Device that provides cost effective Internet connectivity for mobile and portable deployments anywhere there's mobile data available over any network.
"All the companies showed off what's new and next in the world of mobile communications, demonstrating that innovation, imagination and new ideas are still coming from the mobile industry every day," said CommNexus CEO Rory Moore.
The list of judges included SipPhone founder Michael Robertson, best known as the founder of MP3.com and for Gizmo5 as well as MP3 Tunes, San Diego TV 6 technology reporter Steve Kovsky, San Diego Daily Transcript gadget guru and author of from "Concept to Consumer" Phil Baker as well as long time and recently retired Qualcomm Senior Vice President of Strategy Jeff Belk who is now CEO of ICT168. The event was co-hosted and moderated by KenRadio's Ken Rutkowski and Andy Abramson.
"Capturing the GadgetFest crown is really a credit to our entire engineering and product team that have worked tirelessly to get the application ready for launch," said Tom Carter, Truphone's president, The Americas who handled both award winning demonstrations.
In addition to Truphone and Mushroom Networks other companies participating included LG, RIM (Research in Motion), Netivity, Nine Multimedia, Inc. and Real Phone Card Corp.
