DefenseWeb Technologies, Inc., a premier custom software developer and systems integrator for the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal government agencies, announced today the launch of its formal Open Source program.

In response to increased demand by Federal agencies, DefenseWeb will expand the use of Open Source technologies and Open Standards.

“This program is grounded in our commitment to design solutions using the best tools to meet each individual customer’s needs,” said Rick Pope, COO for DefenseWeb. “Our focus continues to be delivering solutions on time and within budget that exceeds our clients’ expectations. Expanding our use of Open Source technology is an extension of this philosophy.”

Specific elements of the company’s program include:

Contribution of Open Source software: DefenseWeb will make available certain software tools created in support of projects using Open Source tools to the worldwide Open Source development community.

Licensing proprietary software to customers: The company will maintain its offering to license the source code of its Xtendable Server platform to customers should they desire to perform additional development in-house.

Direct support of Open Standards: DefenseWeb will continue to use Open Standards, such as XML, SOAP, HTTP where ever possible.

An example of DefenseWeb’s use of Open Source software include a recent project that was awarded to DefenseWeb by the U.S. Army Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC). DefenseWeb will use only Open Source tools to develop a risk communications portal as it relates to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Army families. Similar initiatives have been conducted by the company for other projects, other projects at TATRC and at the Naval Medical Center San Diego.

“We have a rich history of utilizing Open Source technology supporting Web standards and licensing Xtendable Server to customers,” said Pope. “We’re now extending that commitment by making contributions to the Open Source initiative. It’s not only our responsibility to do so as a technology leader, but also our privilege to highlight the dedication and expertise of our DefenseWeb team.”
