CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Carolinas HealthCare System is one of the first health systems without a provider-sponsored health plan that will integrate payer and provider data to improve the health of people across the Southeast United States.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based health system is using one of Verisk Health’s population management solutions in Premier’s PopulationAdvisor™ suite, which manages and analyzes both claims and clinical information to help providers make smart financial, operational and clinical decisions. The population health management suite can help improve wellness and reduce costs associated with gaps in care, such as preventable procedures, readmissions and emergency department visits.
“Carolinas HealthCare System is committed to using data to improve patient care by providing physicians the information they need to anticipate outcomes and intervene early with care designed to better control chronic conditions,” said Michael Dulin, MD, PhD, medical officer for Analytics and Outcomes at Carolinas HealthCare System. “Being able to integrate clinical and claims data provides a 360-degree view of the patient that helps physicians take specific actions, such as encouraging patients to take their prescription medications, which can improve overall health and help reduce hospital readmission rates.”
The PopulationAdvisor suite is accessible on the PremierConnect™ integrated technology and social networking platform. The Verisk Health solution aggregates risk-based payer analytics that are used by more than 450 healthcare and employer organizations. This enables providers like Carolinas HealthCare System to view a more complete picture of patient care with a better understanding of outcomes and total cost, including care delivered outside the health system.
According to Keith J. Figlioli, senior vice president of healthcare informatics for Premier, “Carolinas HealthCare System is making impactful changes to support population health. Connecting this data, providers can incorporate predictive modeling of patient risk to better profile an entire population, not just those who they have treated.”
Premier aligned with Verisk Health, a global leader in healthcare risk management solutions, to enhance their product offering so health systems can:

Carolinas HealthCare System also uses other PremierConnect solutions to reduce hospital-acquired conditions, improve labor productivity and analyze total supply spend.
Data analytics from Activate Networks and Phytel also are key components of the PopulationAdvisor™ suite, helping to identify network referral patterns and automate personalized care interventions to improve patient and physician engagement.
PremierConnect combines patient data on 1 in 4 U.S. community hospital discharges, evidence-based best practices from approximately 2.5 million daily transactions, and approximately $40 billion worth of annual provider purchases, in each case for the calendar year ending 2012.
