FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc., a leader in innovative technology and front-end solutions, and smplsolutions, the one-stop shop for your business communications needs, are proud to announce the installation of Fujitsu’s PalmEntry™ physical access control system at the entrance to the Kay Family Foundation Innovation Lab at UC Irvine’s Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. The Bren School wanted a physical access control system that would provide students, faculty and staff a more reliable, hygienic and secure authentication technology while complementing the advanced technological features of the lab. Fujitsu’s PalmEntry physical access control system fit their needs perfectly.
Designed to foster collaboration, the Kay Family Foundation Lab features monitors, digital media receivers, an interactive whiteboard, laptops and tablets that can be used by students enrolled in a Bren School major. Periodically, exclusive use of the lab is granted to UC Irvine students from all majors who participate in the Bren School’s unique “AppJam” competitions, in which student teams race against the clock to build fully functional mobile applications. To secure the lab and keep the technology safe, UC Irvine wanted a physical access control system where users could not share combination codes or passwords. Fujitsu’s PalmEntry system is a secure, contactless, biometric access control solution that positively authenticates the identity of an individual before allowing access to the lab.
“We wanted to install an advanced security solution that provides the easiest experience possible for students, faculty and staff who use the lab,” said Hal Stern, the Ted and Janice Smith Family Foundation Dean of the Bren School. “The Fujitsu PalmEntry physical control access system installed and supported by smplsolutions provides the security and flexibility we need. It’s easy to manage and maintain, and it takes under a minute to enroll a user.”
PalmEntry relies on Fujitsu’s award-winning PalmSecure biometric technology integrated into a fully deployable access control system. The Fujitsu PalmSecure biometric palm vein sensors use a near-infrared light to capture a user’s palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against the palm vein patterns of pre-registered users. Unlike other readers, the PalmSecure sensor does not come into contact with the skin, making it extremely hygienic, non-intrusive and unrestricted by external factors such as skin types and conditions.
“We are delighted that the Bren School has selected the PalmEntry physical access control system for their physical access control solution for such a prestigious and visible location,” said Randy Fox, senior director, currency handling and identification product solutions, Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc. “The value-added services provided by our installation partner, smplsolutions, will ensure that the Bren School gets the most out of their investment.”
“This reaffirms and strengthens the existing relationship we have with the Bren School for high-quality security solutions,” said David Case, president & CEO, smplsolutions. “The PalmEntry physical access control system is a perfect complement to the systems we have in place currently.”
Fujitsu’s family of biometric solutions, PalmSecure®, PalmSecure for SSO (single sign-on) and the PalmEntry™ physical access control system all utilize the award-winning technology. The palm vein device can only recognize the pattern if the blood is actively flowing within the individual’s veins, which means that forgery is virtually impossible. This advanced, vascular pattern recognition technology not only provides highly reliable authentication with low false accept and reject rates, but also generates fast and easy enrollment.
