RESTON, VA--(Marketwired - December 19, 2013) - Practice Greenhealth is pleased to announce the release of the 2013 Sustainability Benchmark Report, a detailed analysis of useful benchmarking information for hospitals' environmental programs. Available for download by Practice Greenhealth members, the report compiles a vast amount of data collected from the applications of this year's Partner for Change, Partner for Change with Distinction, and Environmental Leadership Circle Award winners. This is the only report that shows comprehensive data illustrating the progress of sustainability across the health care sector in such detail.
This year's report demonstrates that a core group of U.S. hospitals are continuing to make progress on the sustainability front and are taking their sustainability management, tracking and metrics to a new high. Practice Greenhealth's award-winning hospitals saved $10 million in avoided solid waste disposal costs, another $15 million in avoided hazardous waste disposal fees, and more than $1.3 savings in water use. Additionally, Award winners reported annual savings of:
Significant growth was seen in areas such as environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP), and sustainable food programs; in addition, Award winners reported an impressive nine million square feet of recently completed green building and renovations.
"Practice Greenhealth is excited to play an important role promoting sustainability and operational efficiencies across the whole health care sector," said Laura Wenger, RN, executive director of Practice Greenhealth. "This detailed report is a one-of-a kind industry exclusive that will help to identify useful benchmarks across all departments for Practice Greenhealth members as they set their goals for the coming year."
At a time when health care executives are pressured by the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and turning over every rock in pursuit of new efficiencies, understanding how your institution performs next to its peers and zeroing in on remaining areas of opportunity is critical. This report will assist hospitals in conducting that gap analysis, by providing comprehensive data on the environmental progress of health care facilities across the sector for comparison. In addition to reporting out on metrics, the report shares sustainability trends and emerging areas of focus, such as the Greening the OR® Initiative.
