IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Samsung Electronics, one of the largest manufacturers of mobile phones worldwide, will use its single-chip cellular platform for selected future EDGE mobile phones. Based on the 65 nanometer (nm) BCM21331 single-chip EDGE processor with integrated cellular radio, the Broadcom(R) advanced EDGE platform enables features that were only previously available on more expensive 3G handsets to be supported in lower cost 2G phones. Key features include touch-based graphical user interfaces with tactile feedback, motion sensors, advanced multimedia and extended Bluetooth(R), Wi-Fi(R) and GPS connectivity.
"Broadcom is proud to extend our 3G and connectivity relationship with Samsung to include our EDGE products and we look forward to helping bring advanced new handsets to the market," said Scott Bibaud, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Mobile Platforms Group. "Samsung's rigorous development and quality assurance process has resulted in a solid platform ensuring the advanced features, performance, size, power and cost efficiencies required for its future mobile phones."
According to iSuppli market research, the EDGE segment of the mobile phone market is projected to grow from 308 million units in 2008 to over 483 million units in 2012, making EDGE the largest volume sector. Consumer surveys show high interest in cost effective phones that include features initially introduced in more expensive SmartPhones, such as rich graphical user interfaces, touch input, advanced multimedia, Internet connectivity and personal navigation.
The Broadcom BCM21331 EDGE solution is among the most advanced in the industry, integrating the key components required for advanced multimedia phones on a single monolithic die. This includes an integrated quad-band EDGE radio frequency (RF) transceiver, all of the analog and digital baseband functions, and provides built-in support for high quality image capture, USB 2.0 OTG (on-the-go), high-speed secure digital I/O (SDIO) interfaces and H.264 video recording and playback.
The BCM21331 platform also features the BCM59035 power management unit (PMU) and supports advanced multimedia processing on-chip in addition to Broadcom Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity options that enable handset manufacturers to introduce a tiered line of EDGE mobile phones based on one solution - from very low cost, high volume handsets through feature-rich multimedia phones.
