Octasic Announces Initial Shipments of Industry's Smallest Full-Mobility Base Station Platform

Companies mentioned in this article: Octasic Inc

MONTREAL, QC -- (Marketwired) -- 02/04/14 -- Octasic Inc. is proud to announce shipments to customers of its OCTBTS 3000 miniaturized cellular base station platform. First announced in October of 2013, OCTBTS 3000 modules and software began shipping in January 2014 to lead clients, who are now integrating the platform into their own base stations and network analyzers.

As smartphones and tablets proliferate into all geographic areas and vertical markets, operators require small form factor base stations that still offer the range and mobility features of macro cells. The OCTBTS 3000 is a full-featured SDR base station on a 70 mm by 75 mm module -- a footprint about the size of a credit card -- that includes all network interface, packet processing, baseband processing, and RF functions. Designed in collaboration with existing Octasic clients, the OCTBTS 3000 is ideal for leading and specialty vendors targeting applications such as outdoor small cells, rural networks, emergency response networks, private cellular networks, and other specialized base stations.

"Customers asked us for an extremely compact and power-efficient base station platform," commented Emmanuel Gresset, VP Software Defined Radio at Octasic. "Their response to the OCTBTS 3000 has exceeded our expectations. I think we've succeeded in offering an easy-to-use building block that allows system designers to achieve truly miniature form factors. All that developers need to do is add a power amplifier and duplexer to have a complete, deployable, multi-mode base station."

A perfect fit for applications requiring low power consumption (approximately 10 Watts for the base station without a power amplifier), the OCTBTS 3000's power efficiency is enabled by Octasic's OCT2224W base station baseband system-on-chip (SoC).

Beyond low power consumption and small size, the OCTBTS 3000 offers all the benefits of the OCTBTS family, including:

  • 20 Km range for all mobile standards
  • Multi-protocol support (GSM/EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, LTE, CDMA) on a single platform
  • Software-controlled frequency agility from 400 MHz to 3 GHz
  • Fast, low-risk development, thanks to pre-integrated solutions that include hardware, optimized Octasic flexiPHY radio physical layer software, and MAC software from a choice of leading vendors.

Octasic will showcase the OCTBTS 3000 with a live demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2014. Please visit Octasic at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, booth 7G05, Hall 7, February 24 to 27.
