WICHITA, Kan., Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- TECT Aerospace, a global leader in aerospace component manufacturing, announced today their commitment to provide $100,000 over the next five years to Wichita State University (WSU) for the development of a community-wide program that will mentor K-12 students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The STEM mentoring initiative will target girls, low-income youth and students of color. The program will recruit professionals in STEM-related fields in the Wichita area to volunteer to engage in mentoring relationships and activities with K-12 students.

The donation was made possible with the assistance of The Glass Foundation, which provides philanthropic support on behalf of the TECT family of businesses owned by Kenneth E. Glass and family.

"TECT Aerospace and The Glass Foundation are pleased to support WSU's STEM mentoring initiative because we believe it is very important to invest in the education of our nation's youth so that we can ensure a bright, competitive future for our country," said Pete Knapper, president of TECT Aerospace. "Also, we want kids to get excited about STEM-related careers because those future engineers are crucial to the success of our company."

The financial support will also help the university's efforts to be named a winning city in the US2020 City Competition, which seeks to bolster STEM education for underrepresented students nationwide. The WSU-led coalition is one of 13 finalists in the competition, which will award a total of $1 million in resources to five winning cities. The winners are expected to be announced in mid-March.
