When White Oak, TX craftsman Jeff White got a call from world famous sculptor Fernando Gortazar, wanting White's work featured along with his in Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, he was ecstatic. "It took a crowbar and Vaseline to get my head through doors for, you know, a year while I was working on this project," said White to the KTEK News team.

In 1988, Jeff White left the hair styling business to create antler furniture full time. He started out loading his antler creations into his truck and working as a traveling salesman. In 1990, two years after beginning his business, he opened his own storefront. White quickly became surrounded by clients wanting to know more about his unique design products.

"It's not just a job for me, it's a craft. It's making something," White said in a recent interview. "I am excited about making something that [makes] people go 'wow.' "

Rising to the challenge, White did research and worked with his clients to meet their design challenges. He started using the slogan "Your imagination can create a whole new product." White continues to create impressive work that he loves and that amazes his clients.

He attributes his continuing success to the people who have supported him, saying "These people get the credit for keeping a desire burning in me to create the next piece."

White says on his website that much of his inspiration comes from the area where he lives. While his East Texas background inspires his designs, it hasn't limited his business. White gets orders from around the world, including many in large metropolises like New York and San Francisco. White uses the phrase "Think Outside the Ranch" to promote the popularization of antlers in design.

Timing may have been a large part of his success, White acknowledges. While antler décor has been popular in his local for decades, it exploded nationwide just as he started his operation. This allowed him to make important contacts at just the right time, and build lasting relationships for years to come.

His professionalism and quality of design has created much of White's repeat business. "Rich people... are smart and pretty savvy," he told the local news "They know the worth of something, what the fair market value of things are."

White has had his fair share of wealthy, famous clients. Some of his former customers include Ted Turner and Don Henly. His greatest honor to date is still having his original sculptures purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.
