UL and CAN/CSA electrical codes and standards have been necessary requirements for achieving the highest levels of electrical product safety for workers in a vast range of electronics equipment testing, measurement and control, and laboratory equipment environments. To design, engineer and manufacture open HMI solutions that are electrically safe by UL and CAN/CSA standards, AIS’s DMS team understands they must address all the hazards that exist for use in their intended areas of operation. As per the aforementioned standards for electrical product safety for measurement, control and laboratory environments, the hazards must be evaluated during design, engineering and manufacturing stages. There are four fundamental hazards to consider and include testing for: electrical shock, mechanical/physical injury, low voltage/high energy and fire.

As a leader in DMS, the electrical/electronic control equipment team at AIS is always developing new tests and procedures to undertake testing, certification and approval for new standards that help customers sell their products for use in new markets, applications and environments. In order to accomplish these objectives, AIS implements many test phases during the development process. Design tests are performed on a sample of HMI products during the initial design stage. Results of these tests must be available in a file for inspection. In addition to testing during initial design stages, routine production tests are also required. Production tests are typically a subset of the design tests that usually include dielectric strength (hipot) and ground bond or ground continuity tests.

AIS HMIs and PC-based control and monitoring solutions meet electrical safety specification and requirements as per IEC 61010 code which specifies general safety requirements for electrical equipment intended for professional, industrial process, and educational use; any of which may incorporate computing devices, when used under the normal and extended environmental conditions. AIS Design for Manufacturability Services test and certify open Industrial PCs and HMI solutions to perform within the following equipment:

  • Electrical Test and Measurement Equipment: This is equipment which by electromagnetic means tests, measures, indicates or records one or more electrical or physical quantities, also non-measuring equipment such as signal generators, measurement standards, power supplies for laboratory use, transducers, transmitters, etc. This standard also applies to test equipment integrated into manufacturing processes and intended for testing manufactured devices.
  • Electrical Control Equipment: This is equipment which controls one or more output quantities to specific values, with each value determined by manual setting, by local or remote programming, or by one or more input variables.
  • Electrical Laboratory Equipment: This is equipment which measures, indicates monitors or analyzes substances; or is used to prepare materials, and includes in vitro diagnostic (IVD) equipment. This equipment may also be used in areas other than laboratories, for example self-test IVD equipment may be used in the home and inspection equipment to be used to check people or material during transportation.

AIS designs and manufacturers control, monitoring and visualization solutions to meet both normal and extended environmental conditions for safe operation measurement, control and laboratory operations. For indoor and outdoor use, these standards allow for temperatures of 5 °C to 40 °C, along with specified requirements for altitude, maximum relative humidity, mains supply voltage fluctuations, transient overvoltage and applicable rated pollution degree.

It is the third edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1, the third edition of ANSI/ISA-61010-1 (82.02.01), and the third edition of UL 61010-1. This edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1 supersedes the previous edition published as CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1 in 2004. This edition of ANSI/ISA-61010-1 (82.02.01) supersedes the previous edition of ISA-82.02.01 published in 2004. This edition of UL 61010-1 will supersede the second edition of UL 61010-1 published in 2004.
