FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Spurred by The Joint Commission’s new National Patient Safety Goal on clinical alarm safety (NPSG.06.01.01), AAMI Foundation’s HTSI kicked off its inaugural meeting for the National Coalition for Alarm Management Safety last month at AAMI headquarters in Arlington, VA. Extension Healthcare, developer of the Extension Engage™ advanced alarm management middleware platform, is participating in the two-year initiative as one of the elite platinum sponsors.
The mission of the coalition is to promote patient safety through alarm management on a national scale. Members of the coalition – which include clinicians, healthcare technology experts, regulators, patient safety advocates, researches, and leaders in the medical device industry – will meet regularly over the course of the next two years to talk about the current and future state of alarm management and to help improve hospital alarm management.
According to Brian McAlpine, Extension Healthcare Vice President of Product Management and Marketing, “Alignment with AAMI on this effort was a no-brainer. There is a lot of confusion in the market about how to effectively go about solving alarm safety issues and comply with the new NPSG. Our clinical and alarm management experts will be heavily involved in this coalition to help educate other members – and the market as a whole – how they can utilize an advanced alarm management middleware to rectify their current alarm conditions and satisfy TJC alarm safety compliance.”
Marilyn Flack, Executive Director of AAMI Foundation and Sr. Vice President of Patient Safety Initiatives said, “We are so pleased that Extension Healthcare joined the National Coalition for Alarm Management Safety as a platinum sponsor. This demonstrates their ongoing commitment to working with us to help the nation’s hospitals comply with the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal on alarm safety. Together, with Extension’s clinical and alarm management experts and our other member organizations, we have the right people to help hospitals understand how to improve alarm management and meet the 2014 and 2016 NPSG goals.”
Extension Engage is the only enterprise alarm management middleware available today that manages alarms from regulated medical devices (such as ventilators and patient monitors), alerts from non-regulated clinical systems (such as the EHR, nurse call, lab and CPOE systems), and offers an advanced event response mechanism all in a single system. Among other important goals, the coalition plans to write preliminary recommendations of the management of ventilators and infusion pumps. Extension is well positioned to help craft those guidelines with active customers in the U.S. receiving ventilator alerts via their Medical Device Connectivity (MDC) integrator, Capsule Tech.
