WASHINGTON, May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An amendment offered this week that would have forced the Department of Defense (DoD) to allow military personnel to openly carry loaded firearms on U.S. military bases has been withdrawn by the Congressman who attempted to push it through as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 4435). The amendment - offered by Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) - ignored specific recommendations in a 2013 DoD report, published after the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.
The withdrawal by Congressman Gohmert came after public outcry demanded he heed the recommendations of our nation's top military leaders - including the Pentagon, the Army Chief of Staff, and Fort Hood's commanding officer - who oppose forcing military installations to allow soldiers to carry loaded guns on base. Within 24 hours of offering his amendment, Everytown for Gun Safety supporters made more than a thousand calls to their members of Congress, demanding they vote no on the amendment.
"We are putting an end to the days when the Washington gun lobby can just slip in outrageous amendments like this one," said John Feinblatt, President of Everytown for Gun Safety. "Make no mistake about it: the American people are paying attention to what our elected officials are doing - or not doing - to prevent gun violence and we will not hesitate to speak out. We are proud that, in this case, Washington heard us loud and clear and Congressman Gohmert's imprudent amendment was stopped."
"The attempt to override the judgment of our nation's military and require them to allow the open carry of firearms was a seriously misguided effort," said Brigadier General (Ret) Stephen N. Xenakis, MD, USA. "As a Commander with over 28 years of active duty military experience, I oversaw the welfare of thousands of service members. The amendment's failure is the only outcome that respects the necessary safety and security our troops at home deserve."
