SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/28/14 -- Awarepoint Corporation, the largest real-time location system (RTLS) corporation dedicated exclusively to healthcare, announced its partnership with the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise® (IHE) interoperability showcase at the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) 2014 Conference & Expo, May 31-June 2 in Philadelphia, Penn. IHE is an industry wide interoperability initiative to create a standards-based framework for passing vital health information seamlessly within and across multiple healthcare enterprises -- from application to application, system to system, and setting to setting.
Awarepoint serves as an RTLS vendor member of IHE's Patient Care Device (PCD) Medical Equipment Management (MEM) working group and collaborates with other members, including B Braun, Capsule, Cerner, EQ2, GuardRFID, Hospira, Iatric Systems, Philips and SunTech. The vendors will participate in demonstrations at the AAMI conference to illustrate how their enterprise applications and medical devices use standards-based messaging to improve patient care and safety while reducing operating expenses.
"It's exciting to see the MEM groups so close to publishing a trial implementation document that allows medical devices, location services and CMMS systems to interoperate," said Steve Merritt, past co-chair of the IHE PCD planning committee. "We have seen great participation from the stakeholders such as Awarepoint to advance this leap forward in technology management. It's rewarding to see this community come together and demonstrate the fruits of our labor at AAMI so that we can continue to improve patient safety and clinical efficiency, while reducing healthcare delivery costs."
As part of the IHE Interoperability Showcase, Awarepoint will demonstrate how IV pump integration using PCD-10 standard HL7 messages can improve asset utilization and analytics, ultimately reducing costs. For example, identifying IV pumps that are sitting idle in patient rooms allows organizations to expedite the return of pumps to circulation and potentially reduce equipment purchases.
"We're proud to continue our engagement with IHE's medical device interoperability initiative and delighted to be involved in the development of communication standards for location services," said Jay Deady, president and CEO of Awarepoint. "Much like the evolution of the EMR, the industry is recognizing the need for a fully integrated RTLS platform and the ability to exchange and interpret data across systems and devices. For hospitals struggling to cope with the technology demands of a fast-evolving healthcare system, a comprehensive and interoperable RTLS suite maximizes the value of their investments in EHRs, CMMSs and other major HIT systems by automatically populating them with real-time location data for greater efficiency and better outcomes."
The PCD-MEM working group demonstrations will take place throughout the AAMI conference in booth #108 and are sponsored by AAMI, the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
Awarepoint will also be featured at AAMI in booth #235 demonstrating awareAssets' advanced RTLS features including par-level equipment management, proximity-based utilization, infection control and preventive maintenance. In addition, Awarepoint is the primary sponsor of ACCE's Annual Members Meeting/Awards Reception taking place in conjunction with the conference. During this event, Carlene Anteau, MS, RN, Awarepoint VP of Product Marketing, will provide an overview of current and future plans for IHE PCD-standard integration, furthering the value of RTLS in supporting patient safety, quality of care and asset management.
