EAGAN, Minn. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Scantron Corporation today announced the release of its Next Generation Science Item Bank. Developed by Scantron assessment experts to specifically measure student proficiency on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, the item bank targets performance expectations in Life, Physical and Earth Sciences for grades kindergarten through eight. Varied item types focus on individual practices, core ideas and cross-cutting concepts as described in the standards. By developing and incorporating this new science item bank into a comprehensive assessment solution, educators will have the data they need to guide instruction and monitor student progress toward meeting the science knowledge and skills required to compete and lead in today’s global economy.

The NGSS are based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council. This effort was a collaborative, state-led process that created new K–12 science standards that will better prepare high school graduates for the rigors of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) college majors and careers.

“Scantron fully embraces the goals and necessity of the NGSS. Because of this, our experts saw the importance of developing Scantron’s new item bank and making it accessible to educators through our award-winning Achievement Series® assessment solution,” said Jay Whitchurch, Scantron Executive Vice President.

The Achievement Series® assessment solution is used for district-based benchmarking, interim assessments, and classroom-based formative testing. The solution offers districts and schools unique assessment functionality by providing educators the key components for effective results: item bank options, test development, test delivery choices, and reports that provide immediate data to inform instruction with links to available resources.

“At Scantron, we understand that to be effective, districts and schools need a content-neutral structure within their assessment solutions,” said Nikki Shepherd Eatchel, Scantron’s Vice President of Assessment Services & Professional Services. “Along with our new Next Generation Science Item Bank, we provide thousands of pre-designed, standard-aligned item banks. We also offer educators the flexibility to use their own content, utilize other content publishers, or employ our team of experts to create item banks tailored for the exact needs of their district.”

“In today’s increasingly competitive global market, Scantron understands the necessity of properly preparing today’s STEM students for successful careers,” noted Kevin Brueggeman, CEO of Scantron. “Our world-class teams of researchers and developers have created the tools educators need to teach and measure the cogitative and practical skills required for today’s innovation and tomorrow’s imagination.”

The item bank will be available through Achievement Series®, the Scantron® assessment solution used for district-based benchmarking, interim assessments, and classroom-based formative testing.
