PASADENA, Calif. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Today at the WearableTech LA conference, a panel of experts will discuss implantable technology—items that can be placed in a body for a variety of medical reasons, including to monitor, heal, adjust or improve health in ways that non-embedded devices cannot.

The panel, called “Wearables: Everything Ingestible, Implantable,” will run from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the Pasadena Convention Center where the conference is taking place. It will be moderated by Dan Rosenbaum, editor-in-chief of Center Ring Media’s Wearable Tech Insider and a veteran technology journalist. Panelists are:

  • Eric Olson, Director of Design, Karten Design;
  • Dr. Victor Pikov, Bioelectronics R&D Consultant at GSK (Glaxo Smith Kline) and Senior Scientist for Huntington Medical Research Institute); and
  • Joshua Windmiller, CEO, Electrozyme.

“Implantable technology sounds kind of freaky,” said Rosenbaum, “but the first implanted cardiac pacemakers date from 1958 and have been changing lives for the better ever since. As technology gets smaller and more powerful, and as medical science understands the human body better, implantables are a technical frontier that’s just starting to come into view. Most people aren’t aware of all the intensely cool early work being done in this space, such as what these panelists’ companies are working on. Imagine a device that automatically monitors and regulates insulin production in diabetics, or something that detects hypoxia in pilots and warns them to adjust oxygen levels. We’re way past fitness trackers here. It should be a very interesting discussion.”

A technology journalist for more than 30 years and an award-winning writer, Dan Rosenbaum covers wearable technology on his blog, Wearable Tech Insider, which addresses new products, corporate news and technology developments in the world of in wearable technology.
