ROCK HILL, S.C. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Comporium announced today that it will begin to deliver its gigabit Internet service known as Zipstream to 125 fiber-to-the-premises neighborhoods in York and Lancaster counties.

The locally based communications company previously launched Zipstream to businesses in downtown Rock Hill in June, and announced that it would be offering Zipstream to new businesses and residents of the Bleachery area, known as Knowledge Park, as it is developed. Last week, Comporium announced its expansion of Zipstream to businesses in five business parks in Rock Hill.

“At the same time, our engineering team was assessing the network we already established in numerous residential areas,” said Comporium’s Matthew Dosch, executive vice president of customer operations and external affairs. “We feel that we can make this state-of-the-art technology that can provide both download and upload speeds of 1,000 megabits per second available to these households, beginning in September.”

The company said the upgrade project will continue through the end of 2015 as it orders and installs the necessary equipment. Zipstream is dependent upon a state-of-the-art network that contains the following: 1) all-fiber delivery, 2) cutting-edge network equipment, and 3) a robust path to the Internet backbone that can carry significantly larger amounts of data than is carried today.

“Neighborhoods will be activated based on their ‘ring,’ which must support 10 gigabits per second transport and have the appropriate type of electronics,” said Dosch.

The company will initially focus its conversion efforts on the following neighborhoods: Kimbrell Crossing, Reid Pointe, Rosemont, Bridgemill, Hanover Crossing, Trinity Ridge, Lakebridge, Avery Lakes and Dominion Bridge.

Comporium’s Zipstream is almost 85 times faster than the company’s standard Internet service. With this speed residents will enjoy streaming video programming, lightning-fast movie downloads and incredibly rich on-line games. Zipstream will be available to residents for $99 per month.
