Chicago Cosmetic Dentist Reveals Preferred Solutions for Diastema Treatment

CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 07/31/14 -- For many people, having a gap or space in-between their teeth -- a condition known as a diastema -- can be embarrassing, discourage smiling, and lower one's self-esteem. To help patients eliminate these gaps and spaces, Chicago cosmetic dentist Sheldon Seidman, DDS offers a number of effective solutions, three of which include porcelain veneers, Invisalign®, and ClearCorrect™.

In a recent blog post titled, "Effective Ways To Eliminate Gaps Or Spaces In Your Smile," Dr. Seidman explains that a diastema is a common condition resulting from a missing tooth or teeth that have grown in unevenly. He notes that, while traditional orthodontics can often correct the problem, many of his patients choose an alternative solution. "Most patients do not want to wait the necessary time it takes for traditional orthodontics to take effect," says the Chicago dentist. He also highlights that "other patients have tried traditional orthodontics and did not obtain the results they were seeking."

In order to eliminate these gaps and spaces more effectively and efficiently, Dr. Seidman turns to alternative techniques. For patients with gaps caused by missing teeth, he says porcelain veneers may be an effective solution to restore one's smile while preserving most if not all of the tooth's natural structure. In some cases, he adds, there is little to no tooth reduction involved. Should a diastema simply be the result of misaligned teeth, Dr. Seidman reports that many of his patients "are turning toward alternative orthodontic solutions such as Invisalign® or ClearCorrect™ to discreetly realign their teeth for an even, proportionate, healthy-looking smile."

Due to their comfort and clear design, Dr. Seidman says these latter two teeth straightening systems have become his preferred method of diastema treatment for proper candidates. Both Invisalign® and ClearCorrect™ use a series of aligners that are inconspicuous during the treatment period and removable to simplify eating and cleaning. Sometimes in as little as 12 months, patients may be able to obtain a straighter smile with fewer spaces between their teeth.

Ultimately, no matter the degree of gaps or spacing, Dr. Seidman says he will work closely with each patient to determine the most effective diastema treatment for his or her needs.
