Pfizer La Jolla announced today that it is donating $569,750 in laboratory equipment to local universities and to a local startup technology company. The donation is part of Pfizer La Jolla's ongoing commitment to support local educational institutions and scientific endeavors. Donations and grants from Pfizer La Jolla and the Pfizer Foundation in the San Diego-Tijuana area have totaled almost $1 million over the past four years.
Catherine J. "Kitty" Mackey, Ph.D., senior vice president of Pfizer Global Research and Development (PGRD) and head of the La Jolla campus, said improving local math and science education and academic resources is essential to the region's overall vitality.
"San Diego is home to some of the world's most innovative biotech and pharmaceutical firms and research institutions," said Mackey. "Our future success in finding new cures requires a highly-educated workforce. We're pleased to be able to contribute to the institutions that are developing tomorrow's scientists and inventors."
The laboratory equipment is being donated to the University of California, San Diego; San Diego State University; San Diego City College; University of California, Irvine; California State University, San Marcos; the La Jolla Bioengineering Institute, a non-profit research institution; and BioVerdant, a "green chemistry" startup aiming to generate environmentally friendly processes to produce drugs. Pfizer invests heavily in green chemistry and has received awards for its innovations in this field.
The donation is part of a global initiative at Pfizer to donate surplus equipment as new equipment is purchased. Pfizer's New London, Connecticut facility recently donated $200,000 worth of equipment to Xavier University to help it recover from significant damage received during hurricane Katrina. Other sites around the world are making similar donations in their regions as part of Pfizer's philanthropic mission to support community healthcare, science education and public safety initiatives.
