MindTouch, the most comprehensive vendor of business wiki solutions, today launched Wik.is, a community wiki site that simplifies collaboration and knowledge sharing for friends and family members, businesses, associations, students and educators.
Wik.is kicks off with 42,000 existing wikis from users worldwide. Within minutes, new and current community members can create, edit, share, store and search documents, emails, images and files through an intuitive and graphical interface. It functions and looks like a slimmed-down Word processor inside of a Web browser.
“We selected Wik.is to provide an open collaborative environment to host critical funding discussions and show the effectiveness of open technology in education,” said Marc Grober, a member of the IT Budget Review Team at Anchorage School District. “Wik.is is easier to use than any other wiki on the market, and we are pleased with the sense of community the site creates.”
“This launch further demonstrates we have the most extensible and scalable wiki technology, which enables us to develop multiple products and services rapidly at a minimal incremental cost,” said Ken Liu, MindTouch’s CEO. “By making knowledge sharing easy and fun, Wik.is reaches out to the masses, fostering collaboration for individuals and businesses worldwide.”
“Wik.is has been a single-stop solution for my project,” said Gas Bandit, the creator of a videogame heroine wiki. “Its WYSIWYG editor, syntax and structure are blissfully intuitive, and make for a community-editable forum that is ready to use immediately. Without Wik.is, my project probably wouldn’t exist.”
There are two levels of the Wik.is service: free and Pro. Users of the free service receive a public wiki supported by contextual advertisements on its pages and 1GB of storage.
The Pro package provides Wik.is site owners with a private wiki that easily integrates with their existing website for a unified look and feel and simple navigation across the site. This significantly increases community interactions while making the wiki a cohesive element of an organization’s overall online presentation and mission. The Pro service costs $60 per year. For the first time, any individual or organization can have a wiki community as an integral component of their existing website.
Additional features of the package include:
* Privacy: Makes the wiki accessible only to invited users
* Page permissions: Makes pages and sub-pages private or read-only
* Customizable URL: Customers can choose a custom domain or sub-domain
* Additional storage: 10GB – 10 times more than the free version
* No advertisements
