SAN DIEGO--- Tripler Army Medical Center’s Implementation of CliniComp’s Essentris Improves Productivity and Increases Revenue by 47 Percent

CliniComp Intl., the clinical documentation tool for more than 45 percent of all Department of Defense (DoD) inpatient beds, today announced that revenue at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) rose 47 percent after deployment of CliniComp’s Essentris clinical documentation system enterprise-wide. As a result, TAMC recouped its initial IT investment in eighteen months.

Currently, TAMC Essentris users include 1,300 clinicians as well as administrative staff across all 17 TAMC sites. TAMC, the headquarters of the Pacific Regional Medical Command and the largest military hospital in the Asian and Pacific Rim region, initially implemented Essentris at four sites between 1997 and 2003. System-wide installation was completed in October 2007.

“Patient care is our top priority and we knew we wanted to implement an EMR solution that would standardize charting, provide instant access to patient information and maximize productivity,” said Debbie Arai, R.N., TAMC’s chief of inpatient clinical services. “Previously, our nursing staff worked in three different modalities – paper, an older EMR system and printouts – creating inefficient workflow processes and a lack of flexibility. Now, all nurses chart in the same system, using standardized forms, allowing them to transition easily between departments. The quick ROI was a nice bonus.”

TAMC raised revenue by 47 percent by creating key coding phrases for every service line and embedding them into Essentris. “When clinicians enter these phrases, this allows coders to match the appropriate reimbursement to the level of service patients receive, minimizing lost charges and undercoding of claims that resulted from the previously fragmented documentation environment,” stated Arai.

Arai added, “We have also seen a significant surge in productivity in our medical records department. For example, before Essentris, staff had to track down providers to sign an average of 20 incomplete charts every month, a very time-consuming and frustrating activity. We’re now down to about one chart a month that requires administrative closure.”

According to CliniComp’s President, Technology & Operations J.F. Lancelot, "It’s gratifying that our clinical documentation system supports Tripler Army Medical Center’s mission. The ability to provide our clients with almost immediate measurable improvements in patient care, clinician efficiency and revenue management underlies our commitment to providing the best and most user-friendly in-patient EMR solution.”

   About CliniComp

CliniComp is a leading provider of an intelligent, reliable inpatient electronic health record and surveillance solution suite to leading hospitals and health systems. In its nearly two-decade history, CliniComp has been a pioneer in bridging the gap between the back-office and the bedside by extending existing HIS and ancillary systems to the point of care. The Essentris enterprise solution maximizes IT investment and enforces consistent workflow across all aspects of patient care. Essentris’ use of a single, interdisciplinary, electronic chart enables caregivers to easily access and view of the total clinical experience and provides a new generation of real-time clinical surveillance and analysis tools. The result is a dramatic improvement in quality and safety of patient care, outcomes and clinical decision-making. Essentris is deployed at approximately 70 client sites, including UCLA Healthcare, Baptist Health South Florida and Tenet Healthcare Corporation. CliniComp also has a sizable deployment across the Military Health System, covering more than 45 percent of all Department of Defense beds.
