Cubic Applications, Inc., a defense services subsidiary of Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB), has been awarded a contract with a potential value of $16.3 million to explore emerging technologies and develop prototype solutions to strengthen the military's training in nuclear, biological and chemical response.

In July, Cubic began work on an incrementally funded contract with the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) in Orlando, Florida. NAWCTSD has provided $2 million in funding to date for the contract, which is scheduled for completion in May 2011. Employees of Cubic's Virginia-based Threat Technologies Division are performing the work in Shalimar, Florida, near Eglin Air Force Base, a key focal point for the technology development. This effort is part of the Training Transformation (T2) Initiative in support of U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM).

"This is an important effort within the overall Training Transformation initiative and increases Cubic's business with NAWCTSD, as well as with our Eglin and Joint Forces Command customers. It also provides the contractual vehicle that may lead to other opportunities within the joint testing and training environments," said Rick Dickson, Program Director and lead for the Shalimar office within Cubic's Threat Technologies Division.

The goal of this project is to research and develop a prototype with the capability to conduct repeatable, realistic Joint Training, Testing and Experimentation (TT&E) for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction across the Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) domains. A single, interoperable environment for testing, training and experimentation could maximize synergies in these areas while minimizing financial outlays.

Specific tasks to be performed include:

   - - Developing a LVC Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and High Explosives (CBRNE) Environment and Chemical Biological Instrumented Training System (CBITS). The LVC CBRNE Environment/CBITS will include a mobile command and control system that could be used to track instrumented players during training exercises.

   - - Testing and evaluating the LVC CBRNE Environment/CBITS to facilitate joint testing, training and experimentation.

   - - Identifying, researching and evaluating emerging technologies to facilitate integration of the LVC CBRNE Environment/CBITS with operational environments as well as training domains.

   - - Assessing emerging technologies for tracking both instrumented and non- instrumented players on joint training and testing ranges.

Cubic Applications, Inc., is part of the defense segment of Cubic Corporation, a world leader in realistic combat training systems, mission support services and defense electronics. The corporation's other major segment, Cubic Transportation Systems, designs and manufactures automatic fare collection systems for public mass transit authorities.
