Artes Medical Inc., a medical technology company focused on the development of a new generation of permanent injectable aesthetic products, today announced the appointment of Karla R. Kelly as the Company's first Vice President of Legal Affairs and General Counsel. Ms. Kelly has provided legal services to the Company since 1999. In her new role, Ms. Kelly will establish the Company's legal department and will be responsible for the legal activities for the Company. The appointment comes at an exciting time for the Company as final FDA approval for its lead product, ArteFill, a permanent, injectable micro-implant that provides aesthetic effects for nasolabial folds or smile lines, is pending.
"Karla brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Artes Medical and we are thrilled to have such a competent and experienced attorney guiding the Company as we move towards final FDA approval for our lead product, ArteFill," said Dr. Stefan Lemperle, President and CEO of Artes Medical. "Her strong business and healthcare legal background, nursing degree and intimate knowledge of the industry and history of our company makes her well-suited to represent Artes."
Ms. Kelly has over 20 years of legal experience. Prior to Artes, Ms. Kelly practiced out of her own law firm, which she established in 2003. Since 1984, she has practiced as a transactional attorney, representing businesses and individuals, in areas of corporate and business law, including the medical device, professional medical services and healthcare delivery systems sectors. With broad knowledge in healthcare law and general business transactions, Ms. Kelly formerly practiced as Special Counsel with the San Diego law firms of Gray, Cary, Ware & Fredenrich and Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps and formerly served as Assistant General Counsel for Scripps Health. Ms. Kelly is published and lectures in the areas of general business, nonprofit law and health care law and is a member of the American Bar Association, the San Diego County Bar Association, San Diego Lawyers Club, and the Association of Corporate Counsel. Prior to receiving her law degree in 1984, Ms. Kelly was an officer in the United States Navy Nurse Corps Reserve.
"Artes Medical is an exciting, entrepreneurial company with a deep commitment to its employees, its future customers and its innovative product pipeline," said Ms. Kelly. "I am proud to be part of the Artes management team and thrilled to be part of a company that is involved in developing a new category of permanent micro-injectable aesthetic products."
Ms. Kelly holds a law degree from George Washington University National Law Center and a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing from the College of St. Catherine.
