Ethertronics Inc., a leading provider of standard and customized embedded antenna solutions for wideband and multi-band wireless devices, today announced that it has supplied its high-performance antennas to DriveCam Inc., a global Driver Risk Management company, for its innovative behavior-based risk mitigation solution. DriveCam's risk mitigation solution is used by distribution fleets worldwide to predict and prevent risky driving behaviors and save lives, and is also being used by parents to monitor their teenagers’ driving behaviors.
Mounted on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, DriveCam’s video event recorder is able to capture sights and sounds both inside and outside the vehicle including exceptional forces such as hard braking, swerving and collision; causing the recorder to save the critical seconds immediately before and after the triggered event. Using Ethertronics’ embedded antenna solutions, captured digital video of these saved events is wirelessly sent to a center to be analyzed and used in ongoing driver coaching programs to improve behavior and mitigate driver risk.
To ensure ubiquitous coverage and enable wireless transmission of recorded events, DriveCam incorporated both a cellular main and diversity antenna from Ethertronics. Measuring at less than 0.18 cubic inches, Ethertronics’ compact main quad-band antenna covers the GSM 850, GSM 900, DCS and PCS bands, while the company’s miniature diversity antenna operates independently on the GPS and CDMA bands and measures a mere 0.1 cubic inches. Both antennas utilize Ethertronics’ patented Isolated Magnetic DipoleTM (IMD) technology, whose high-isolation characteristics make it immune to frequency shifts and enable the highest levels of performance in an array of real-life environments.
“With DriveCam’s user base, it is critical that our Driver Risk Management solutions work along thousands of roads and highways without coverage holes, which is why we charged Ethertronics with providing a universal antenna solution that could also provide GPS capabilities while operating across a variety of cellular frequency bands,” said Peter Ellegaard, vice president of hardware and firmware engineering at DriveCam. “In addition, by incorporating Ethertronics’ embedded antennas into our product, we were able to improve the overall device performance and design a unit that is robust, secure and most importantly, unobtrusive to the driver. Ethertronics’ high-performance antenna solutions coupled with a hands-on engineering and customer support team made the design process seamless and simple.”
“Given the nature of DriveCam’s risk management solution, wireless reception is key to its reliability and effectiveness,” said Jeffrey Crosby, CEO of Ethertronics. “With our compact, IMD-powered antennas, not only were we able to expedite the antenna integration process, but we also are able to ensure the superior wireless range and the highest levels of performance regardless of a vehicle’s surrounding environment. We are pleased to be working with DriveCam on such an important, life-saving tool.”
