Sequoia Communications, the RF semiconductor company setting new benchmarks in multi-mode design and integration, today announced that it has been named a winner in the 2008 Editor’s Choice Awards by Portable Design magazine, the engineer’s resource for portable applications.

Over the course of each year, Portable Design staff reviews thousands of product submissions and singles out a select few for recognition. The publication’s editor-in-chief, John Donovan, makes the final determination and appoints the winners of this prestigious editorial award. Sequoia Communications’ SEQ7400 RF transceiver was first recognized by Portable Design as its featured product of the month in the June 2007 issue.

“This year the RF engineering market has seen a tremendous amount of innovation,” said John Donovan, editor-in-chief of Portable Design. “We selected Sequoia Communications’ SEQ7400 because this product is the first and only solution of which we are aware that uniquely integrates multiple modes on a single chip, thereby addressing critical power, size and cost issues for handset makers.”

Originally introduced in May 2007, the SEQ7400 is based on the company’s patented FullSpectra architecture, which includes the only transmitter in the industry to use polar modulation in all modes. The product has the industry’s highest level of integration, makes the most efficient use of silicon area, and has the lowest calibration burden at the phone level. In February 2008, the company announced that extensive testing verified that the HEDGE transceiver supports HSUPA, TD-SCDMA, S-Band and GMR satellite specifications, enabling ‘SDR-like’ flexibility without cost or power tradeoff.

“This award is further validation of the flexibility and differentiation that polar modulation enables,” said Dave Shepard, CEO of Sequoia Communications. “The SEQ7400 is the first true “flexible radio” in the industry and we continue to validate new modes with no changes to the chip itself. This is just the beginning!”

Past awards garnered by the SEQ7400 include the 2007 Global Handset RF Semiconductor Product Differentiation of the Year Award by industry analyst group Frost & Sullivan and the June 2007 Wireless Design & Development Technology Award.
