Captiva Software Corp. (NASDAQ: CPTV), a leading provider of input management solutions, today announced that it will augment its recently released Digital Mailroom(TM) with new technology from Autonomy, a global leader in enterprise infrastructure software. Through the licensing agreement, Captiva will add Autonomy's advanced text categorization capabilities to the Digital Mailroom, an automated classification and routing system for digitized images of inbound mail and electronic communications. Autonomy's advanced pattern recognition software will replace Kofax's Mohomine toolkit.
"Autonomy's superior text categorization technology offers more robust and scalable learning abilities than the previous toolkit utilized within the Digital Mailroom. It's able to better process optical character recognition (OCR) output and other electronic data streams and interpret words contextually to deduce meaning. This results in the more efficient and accurate classification of text and documents," said Jim Nicol, Captiva's executive vice president of product development. "Autonomy's technology provides an automated, scalable solution to categorizing documents that empowers us to offer a better, more robust Digital Mailroom solution to our customers. In addition, Autonomy's size, resources, market share and successful track record in serving its large customer base was a factor in selecting them as a technology partner."
At the heart of Autonomy's technology is its ability to identify and rank concepts within text. The technology "learns" what new words or acronyms represent as information enters the system. Because of this ability, Autonomy automates the categorization of information based on subject matter, thereby providing a highly scalable solution for large volumes of information that needs to be quickly categorized and processed. In addition, because Autonomy's technology identifies concepts rather than just key words, it provides more accurate categorization. As an example of the advantage of this approach, unlike keyword-based methods, Autonomy's technology can recognize misspelled words because it is not matching exact words.
"We're proud to partner with Captiva and allow it to offer advanced technology that strengthens its Digital Mailroom solution," said Stouffer Egan, CEO of Autonomy North America. "As our latest OEM customer, Captiva demonstrates the wide range of leading companies that utilize our technology to automate information management within their applications."
The Digital Mailroom offers a single point of entry for a company's incoming mail, faxes, e-mail and electronic communications streams. The system automatically recognizes and routes digitized images of documents and data to the appropriate department or person for processing while concurrently providing full auditing and tracking capabilities. This results in reduced operational costs, the elimination of paper as it enters the enterprise and faster, more accurate routing of forms, documents and other transactions for accelerated business processes and optimized customer satisfaction.
Introduced at the AIIM (Association for Information and Imaging Management) 2003 Conference & Exposition, the Digital Mailroom swept the event awards, garnering the "Best New Product" by e-DOC magazine and named among the "Best of AIIM" by Transform magazine. KMWorld Magazine subsequently named Digital Mailroom a "Trend Setting Product of 2003." Captiva will demonstrate the Digital Mailroom at the AIIM 2004 Conference and Exposition (booth #1301), taking place March 8 - 10 in New York City.
